The Tribhuvan International Airport lies in the eastern part of Kathmandu. The city center is only 5 km from the airport. There are prepaid taxis available at the airport. Other taxis are available on hire outside the arrival gate but you may have to bargain with them on price. Those with valid booking in hotels can be provided airport transfer facility by the respective hotels if requested in advance. The INTERWEAVE Local Coordinator may provide asistance on arrival if requested by the grant holder. During the stay, the grant holder may be provided necesary assistance by the Host Supervisor for Academic Staff/Doctoral and Master's Mobility Students and by the concerned departments for Bachelor's Mobility students.
There are no hall of residence available at the Institute of Engineering which will be hosting the INTERWEAVE grant holders willing to come to Tribhuvan University. There is an International House at The University Campus in Kirtipur (about 6 km from the Institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus) and mobility student grantees can be placed there if vacancy is available.
No language courses for mobility grant holders are available. However, grantees willing to learn Nepali or other languages can find relevant offers from private institutions in Kathmandu on payment of certain fees.
Furnished apartments may be available in Kathmandu but they are very few. Usually, in Nepal people rent out unfurnished apartments. Apartment hotels are also available on sharing basis. The price varies according to the facilities available. Furnished apartment with two bedrooms, 1 hall and a kitchen with 800m2 area may cost from around 250-500 Euros/month based on the location. The electricity and water supply charges are as per usages and within 20-30 Euros/month. The food cost will be around 100-150 Euros/month if prepared at home. You can get a good traditional Nepali lunch or dinner for about 3-5 Euros in normal eateries. The climate in Kathmandu is subtropical with temperature ranging from a minimum of 0 celsius during Dec/January to a maximum of 32-34 celsius during May/June/July. The average daytime temperature normally falls between 25-32 celsius with the minimum night time temperature between 18-24 celsius. Overall, baring few months, the climate is mild and pleasant. There are four seasons with June/July/August witnessing heavy rainfall and February/March/April being dry months. The autumn and sping are very pleasant. There are a lot of cultural events going on in Kathmandu valley. Every fortnight there are some cultural events going on in Kathmandu valley. These cultural events are related to the traditions of various ethnicities that inhabit Nepal and specifically Kathmandu valley. The Newar community has very rich cultural heritage as witnessed by various monuments, temples and palaces built during the reign of Malla Kings in Kathmandu valley. Apart from that, there are many religio-cultural and ethno-cultural festivals observed by people in Nepal and the Kathmandu valley. There are large number of temples both Hindu and Budhist in Kathmandu valley some of them built as early as in the 6th century. Majority of the people are Hindus followed by Budhists and Muslims. Nepal is known for religiou tolerance and tranquility.
The progress of the Bachelor's and Master's mobility grant holders will be monitored through their performances in regular tests and assignments during the semester and in the final written exam at the end of the semester. For Doctoral mobility grant holders, the respective host supervisor will be responsible for monitoring the activities of the grantee.
There will be a welcome programme organized by the University for the incoming mobility grant holders at the start of the mobility.
